Firekeeper’s Daughter Book Review

Summary

Daunis Fontaine is an eighteen-year-old biracial Ojibwe girl who has her future laid out ahead of her: playing hockey, attending the University of Michigan and going on to study medicine. That is before tragedy struck her family in the form of her uncle’s death and her grandmother’s stroke, which have cast an ever-darkening shadow of grief over her mother. But transferring to the local university so she can stay in town isn’t the worst thing, especially with the arrival of the handsome new boy, Jamie. Then everything in the new normal changes when Daunis witnesses a murder, and Daunis must reckon with an even newer normal where nothing is as it seems.

As a series of meth-related deaths and disappearances start happening around town, Daunis is recruited by the FBI as a confidential informant for her scientific skill and connections to the investigation. But there are more secrets and lies than Daunis ever could have thought, and Daunis may be the only person who can save her community.

Review

Firekeeper’s Daughter is without a doubt one of the most fantastic books I have read all year. It was everything I hoped for and more, and I loved so much about Firekeeper’s Daughter, from the plot to the characters to the important issues and themes that are woven throughout. Daunis is an amazing main character and I loved how her relationships with her family members, community and Ojibwe identity were so deeply explored. The mystery is also fantastic, and the twists kept me guessing until the last second. This book can definitely be described as a crime thriller, and Angeline Boulley’s thoughtful yet riveting writing style lends itself extremely well to the mystery/thriller genre. Firekeeper’s Daughter also addresses so many important issues throughout the story, including sexual assault, violence against Indigenous women and addiction. Overall the themes of the book were so amazing as well and especially loved how the themes about family, identity, grief, growth and community were so prominent. Firekeeper’s Daughter is an incredibly impactful, layered and emotional story, and I can’t recommend it enough. There is so much more I could write about this amazing book, but I don’t think I’d ever be able to do it justice, so just take my word for it and go get yourself a copy!
