Mooncakes Book Review

Summary

Nova Huang is a teenage witch who loans books of spells from her grandmothers’ bookshop. Tam Lang is a werewolf who has been on the run from a cult trying to possess them with a demon. When Nova hears reports of a white wolf in the forest, she goes to investigate, only to find her childhood crush Tam has returned.

Together, as Nova and Tam’s romance rekindles, the two of them must fight off the dark forces at play using Tam’s wolf magic and Nova’s powers. But they won’t be alone, they’ll have help from Nova’s witch grandmothers and her best friend. The only question that remains is will they be able to defeat the demon and the evil cult in time before they capture Tam and possess them with a demon.

Review

Mooncakes is a wonderfully sweet witchy graphic novel. I loved the romance, the family dynamics and the strong messages of friendship. Nova and Tam’s romance is really cute, and I love how much the author fleshed out their backstories and characters. Despite the book only being about 250 pages long, I feel like as a reader I still got to get to know and love the characters. Mooncakes also has a diverse cast, which is so amazing to see, as it has hearing impaired, queer, non-binary (who uses they/them pronouns throughout the book) and Chinese-American representation. The story, magic and relationships are all so wholesome, and you can’t help but love the soft cozy atmosphere of the setting (think Chilling Adventures of Sabrina but soft, more wholesome and queer). This book would definitely be a great fall read, and perfect for anyone who loves magic, soft witches and cute romance.
