Two Can Keep a Secret Book Review

Summary

When their mom lands herself in a rehab facility, seventeen-year-old twins Ellery and Ezra are moving in with their grandmother in their mother’s hometown, a small Vermont town with a tragic past that began with their aunt Sarah’s disappearance as a teen. Ellery is a true-crime fanatic who hopes to solve not only the mystery of her aunt’s disappearance but also the murder of the town’s homecoming queen five years ago.

However, she’s about to discover that despite its rosy exterior, Echo Ridge is full of more secrets, past and present, than she could have imagined. And when threatening messages referencing the town’s history of murder start cropping up around town, it becomes more crucial than ever for Ellery to find out what happened to Echo Ridge’s murdered girls, before it happens again.

Review

Two Can Keep a Secret is your classic twisty, small-town atmospheric murder mystery. It truly is your quintessential teen mystery, with bloody threats, homecoming queens turning up dead, and many classic high school tropes. The plotting is also great in this book, expertly weaving past and present murders together and culminating in a final chilling twist that I never expected. However, I think my favourite thing was the isolated small-town setting. It’s your typical close-knit community with a picturesque exterior, but with multiple generations steeped in tragedy, and it gave the story such an unsettling and creepy feel. All in all, this was a great read for a lover of high school horror and murder mysteries like me, and I’d recommend it to fans of One of Us is Lying and A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder.
