Felix Ever After Book Review

Summary

Felix Love is a young trans artist at a prestigious New York City art school who dreams of going to Brown. However, despite his close friendships he often finds himself feeling lonely and wondering how everyone else finds it so easy to find love and wishes for once it was him who got to have a happily ever after.

And to make matters worse, one of his classmates anonymously posts photos of him before his transition with his deadname and starts sending Felix transphobic messages. Naturally, Felix crafts a plan to prove his tormentor’s identity, but finds out that his assumptions were so much farther from the truth than he could’ve imagined. On top of that, Felix’s plan has landed him in a love triangle that includes his best friend, and he might even be falling in love with his former enemy. But all this has led Felix to dig deeper into himself and his emotions than ever before, setting him on a path of self-discovery that will change his life and his relationship with himself.

Review

Where to start with Felix Ever After? I really loved this book. The characters themselves are really the stars of the show. The characters are complex, and the main character Felix has a great arc and incredible character development, and the relationships between the characters are so wonderfully real and complicated. I also loved the deep friendships and found family dynamics in this book, and it was amazing to see own voices trans representation and a full cast of diverse queer characters. Felix Ever After also has great romance and mystery elements, and the cherry on top is that it’s set in New York, which is one of my all-time favourite settings for books. This book also addresses transphobia and other issues LGBTQ+ youth are facing within the storyline, which is something that I thought was handled very well, but could be a trigger for some, so keep that in mind if you’re considering reading this one. I’d highly recommend this book to anyone, although I think readers who love warm fuzzy happy endings and loveable characters will especially enjoy Felix Ever After. I have no doubt that this is one of the most important books I’ve read all year, and it was most certainly a five-star read.
