Book Recommendations Based on My Mug Collection

Yes, you read that right. I’m going to give you eight book recommendations based on my mugs! I got the idea for this post from Olivia’s video Recommending Books Based on My Mug Collection on her YouTube channel Olivia’s Catastrophe, so full credit to her for the amazing idea. Be sure to check her out there and follow her on Instagram too! I thought this would be a great post to follow up on my April post about book and tea pairings, so I hope you enjoy!

These yellow and turquoise coloured mugs are some of my favourite and most used mugs! The book I’m recommending based on them is Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo.

The reason why I chose Clap When You Land is that the colours of the spine match these mugs perfectly, and Elizabeth Acevedo is one of my all-time favourite authors, making it the perfect book to go with my favourite mugs. Read my full review of Clap When You Land here.

This season’s greetings mug is a very old and well-loved Christmas mug that I use all year round because it’s the perfect size for an afternoon cup of tea or a hot chocolate. And of course, because it’s a Christmas mug, I just had to choose my favourite Christmas read: The Greenglass House by Kate Milford.

The Greenglass House is a charming and cozy mystery set at Christmas time! Just like this mug, The Greenglass House is comforting and warm, and pairs well with hot chocolate. Find my full review here.

This purple and gold teacup is the mug I use most often for my bookstagram pictures! I love the colour and I think it’s the perfect mug that’s both classic and modern. For the book, I chose The Wollstonecraft Detective Agency: The Case of the Missing Moonstone by Jordan Stratford.

This book is one of my favourite middle-grade mysteries, and the purple and gold cover matches this mug perfectly. The Case of the Missing Moonstone is just the right blend of fun and history, just like this teacup. Read my full review of The Case of the Missing Moonstone here.

#4

This small white mug features a little cat on the handle, which I think is very subtle and cute. My recommendation based on this mug is Kit Pearson’s A Day of Signs and Wonders.

Set over the course of one day, A Day of Signs and Wonders is a short, simple and sweet imagining of Emily Carr’s childhood. I think it fits very well with the style of this mug, especially because one of the main characters is nicknamed is Kitty. Find my full review of A Day of Signs and Wonders here.

#5

This bright mug is a recent addition to my mug collection, so I haven’t had very many chances to use it yet. For the book recommendation, I chose Dear Haiti, Love Alaine by Maika and Maritza Moulite.

I think this is the perfect book to recommend based on this mug! Both are bold and fun, and I think that the bright flowers on the mug match the cover well too! Read my full review of Dear Haiti, Love Alaine here.

#6

This mug is probably the cutest one in my collection, and I love it so much! For the recommendation, I chose Wildwood by Colin Meloy, which was one of my childhood favourites (and the first book I reviewed on this blog 6 years ago!).

Wildwood is full of animal characters in the secret forest world called Wildwood, so I thought it would be a great match for this mug! Read my full review of Wildwood here.

This mug always makes me laugh, as I find the picture of a cat with an umbrella on it to be quite random and amusing. The book I’m pairing with this mug is We Are All Made of Molecules by one of my favourite authors, Susin Nielsen.

I can’t think of a more perfect recommendation than We Are All Made of Molecules. Just like this cat mug, it’s funny and unique! Also, the main character Stewart has a cat (named Schrodinger), and it’s set in Vancouver (just a couple of hours from where I live), which is one of the rainiest places I know. So, a cat with an umbrella mug really is perfect for this book. Find my full review here and my interview with Susin Nielsen here.

#8

This mug is an old favourite, known simply as “the moon mug.” The book I’ve chosen to recommend based on it is The Marvels by Brian Selznick.

The Marvels is an extraordinary testament to the power of storytelling that features 390 pages of illustrations and tells a tale based on the real “time capsule” and fictional family of 18 Folgate Street, London. I think that the cover matches the moon mug quite well, and this book just reminds me of this mug in general. Find my full review of The Marvels here.

I hope you enjoyed these recommendations, and don’t forget to check out Olivia’s mug recommendation video here if you haven’t already.

Until next time,
