Book and Tea Pairings For the Tea-Loving Reader

If you’re reading this, odds are you like to read. And if you also happen to love tea, this post is for you. I am constantly drinking tea (I am drinking tea as I write this), and it is one of my favourite things aside from my cats and books. So, I decided to combine my passions for tea and books into one book and tea pairing list!

#1

The Book: The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee

A fun and adventurous, romance that’s part Pirates of the Caribbean and The Princess Bride, starring Monty, the rogue son of a British nobleman. Read my full review here.

The Tea: Earl Grey

With a rich and royal flavour, Earl Grey is a classic black tea flavoured with bergamot.

I think that these two are a perfect pair because earl grey is a classic English tea with a lot of flavour. I feel like it represents both Monty’s upper-class English roots as well as the charm and adventure of The Gentleman’s Guide.

#2

The Book: The Love & Lies of Rukhsana Ali by Sabina Khan

A powerful story of love and truth, The Love & Lies of Rukhsana Ali is a vivid and heartbreaking read. Find my full review here.

The Tea: Chai

Warm, spicy, and comforting, Chai is a delicious and flavourful tea.

The Love & Lies of Rukhsana Ali is centred around the life of gay Bengali teen Rukhsana, and whether you’re having authentic Chai or Rukhsana’s girlfriend Ariana’s favourite Starbucks Chai latte, Chai provides the perfect warm flavour to accompany this read.

#3

The Book: Kings, Queens and In-Betweens by Tanya Boteju

An engaging tale of self-discovery and the drag scene. With bubbly and unique characters, Kings, Queens, and In-Betweens is a memorable read. Find my full review here.

The Tea: Fruity Green

A fruity green tea flavoured with berries, citrus or fruit provides exciting and fun flavours in a hot or iced brew.

I think that a fruity green tea really matches Deidre’s energy and outgoing personality, which makes it the perfect companion to Kings, Queens and In-Betweens.

#4

The Book: The Lie Tree by Frances Hardinge

One of my favourite books! The Lie Tree is a mystery, fantasy and historical fiction rolled into one incredible package. Read my full review here, and my interview with Frances Hardinge here.

The Tea: Plain black tea

Plain black tea is the classic staple in a tea cupboard.

The Lie Tree presents a nuanced historical tale set in Victorian England. I think that a simple black tea matches the time period and atmosphere of the story perfectly.

#5

The Book: Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson

A classic mystery with dual past and present plots unfolding in unison, Truly Devious has all the makings of an excellent mystery: the charming setting, the eccentric characters, and of course, the brilliant detective. Read my full review here.

The Tea: Apple Spice

A spiced apple tea with cinnamon and ginger flavours conjures feelings of fall and winter coziness.

Set at a picturesque Vermont boarding school, Truly Devious is a true “cozy mystery.” And what better to drink while reading a cozy mystery than an apple spice tea? Any tea with apple and cinnamon will make an excellent match.

#6

The Book: Outrun the Moon by Stacey Lee

Outrun the Moon is a wonderful piece of historical fiction about perseverance during a disaster. Read my full review here.

The Tea: Jasmine Green Tea

Softly delicate and floral, Jasmine green tea provides a beautiful, distinctive and calming flavour.

I think that these two pair really nicely together because the jasmine tea balances out the disaster that takes place in the storyline, and compliments the strong-willed nature of the narrator Mercy.

#7

The Book: With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo

Inspiring characters meet culinary ventures and an uplifting feel-good book from one of my favourite authors. Read my full review here.

The Tea: Lemon Ginger

Warm and flavourful with a hint of spice, lemon ginger is comforting and bright.

Lemon ginger tea’s flavour, bright warmth and spice perfectly align with Emoni’s character and culinary pursuits. A perfect feel-good tea for a heartwarming and poignant read.

#8

The Book: My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows

A magical romp through an alternate history, My Lady Jane is a hilarious adventure told through multiple points of view. Read my full review here.

The Tea: Mint

Refreshing, aromatic and flavourful, mint tea is one of my favourites.

Refreshing and exciting, My Lady Jane shares many of the same attributes as mint tea. The two go perfectly hand in hand, both my go-to read and my go-to tea.

#9

The Book: Love From A to Z by S. K. Ali

A serendipitous, beautiful rom-com, Love From A to Z explores relationships and it’s characters so well. Read my full review here.

The Tea: White tea

Delicious hot or iced, white tea can be calming or invigorating depending on the flavour.

White tea can be so many things, but whether you’re having it hot, iced, floral or fruity, you really can’t go wrong. I think that white tea’s versatility as well as it’s delicate, lovely flavour compliment the storyline of Love From A to Z excellently.

#10

The Book: Alex & Eliza: A Love Story by Melissa De La Cruz

Alex & Eliza: A Love Story is a charming tale of love, war and life in revolutionary America. Read my full review here.

The Tea: Chamomile

Chamomile is a familiar, calm and comforting brew.

I think that chamomile is a delicious, soothing tea that pairs very nicely with Alex & Eliza, which I think of as a sort of comfort read, with it’s a romantic plot and historical setting.

That’s it for today’s list! I hope you enjoy these books and teas! If you’re looking for excellent tea, I get most of my teas from Silk Road.

Until next time,
