Cuckoo Song Book Review

Summary

Triss knows as soon as she wakes up after a terrible accident involving the Grimmer, a pond once used to drown witches, that something is different and wrong. She can’t remember certain things and she is always hungry no matter how much she eats. As confused Triss tries to make sense of everything, she begins to see and hear things no one else can. Triss’s dolls come to life in her hands, screaming that they don’t belong to her. And the frightening dolls are only the start of it!

Absurdly, Triss is afraid of scissors and pieces of dirt and dead leaves seem to appear wherever she goes. Then Triss finds evidence of mysterious dealings between members of her family and a man called the architect. In a world where reality cannot be counted on, Triss struggles to reveal secrets and disentangle mysteries in order to save herself and her family.

Review

Cuckoo Song is a wonderfully strange and menacing story worth reading. I started reading it after I finished The Lie Tree, which is also written by Frances Hardinge. I thoroughly enjoyed Cuckoo Song because of the strange and intricate plot, which had lots of twists in it, as well as the elements of magic woven into the historical setting of Cuckoo Song
